Birjand Research Station was established in 1985 by the efforts of Dr. Jamshid Darvish, the then president of Birjand University, and with the approval of the International Desert Research Center of the University of Tehran. Some of the research activities carried out at this station are as follows:

1- Investigating the development issues of southern Khorasan (case study of Nai Band)

2- Collecting and identifying plants of the Birjand region (creating a herbarium)

3- Investigating the process of water erosion on the Marl Formation with emphasis on climate factors and vegetation cover of the Mokhtaran region of Birjand
