Planting 22 thousand plant species in the green belt of Gol Gohar to Sirjan

Creating a green belt from Gol Gohar to Sirjan is one of the successful projects of this center, which was carried out under the leadership of Dr. Hamid Reza Nasseri, assistant professor at the International Desert Research Center.
In order to fulfill its duties of providing scientific and administrative services to the society, this center has always been actively present in the field of natural resources during its half-century of activity. Creating a green belt from Gol Gohar to Sirjan is one of the successful projects of this center, which has been fruitful under the leadership of Dr. Hamidreza Naseri, assistant professor of the International Desert Research Center and in cooperation with the Gol Gohar Sirjan Mining and Industrial Company. The project to create a green belt from Gol Gohar to Sirjan on the main route from Sirjan to Shiraz is the subject of an agreement between the Vice-Chancellor of Research of the University of Tehran and the Gol Gohar Sirjan Mining and Industrial Company, which has been requested by this company and also by many citizens of Sirjan.
The initial studies of this project were initiated by the International Desert Research Center in late 2017, and its implementation program also began in 2018. In this project, 30 kilometers from the 50-kilometer route from Sirjan to the exclusive road of the Gol Gohar Mining and Industrial Company were planted in the form of a green belt with various species of trees, shrubs, and bushes. There were two main challenges in implementing this project: the desert nature of the project area and the presence of saline lands along this route, as well as the lack of rainfall, were among the challenges in implementing this project. Of course, with the help of soil improvement planning by the study team and the use of various methods and materials such as hydrogel, soil texture lightening, humic acid and polymer, a suitable substrate was created for planting different species. With the efforts made, 22,000 plants of different species such as Gaz Shahi, Shorgaz, Qara Dagh, Black Olive, Mountain Almond, Eucalyptus, Atriplex, etc. were planted based on the characteristics of the soil.
This project has been completed with minimal losses and in close cooperation with the managers of the Gol Gohar Mining and Industrial Company and the International Desert Research Center of the University of Tehran. Currently, the project implementation area on the Sirjan-Gol Gohar road has gained a better perspective, which in addition to the function of green space, has provided the opportunity to spread the culture of environmental protection among the local community, mine employees and Sirjan citizens in the region. With the success of the first phase of this project, which was to create green space in line with the social responsibilities of the Gol Gohar Industrial and Mining Company, additional phases are underway to create green space covering an area of three thousand hectares of land adjacent to the Gol Gohar mines. This project is a model for scientific management and the application of technical knowledge to meet the needs of the industrial sector in the field of environment and natural resources, which has been completed in a challenging desert environment.
